Something delicious this way comes...

I like dessert a lot. I have been known to skip a true dinner so that I can enjoy more dessert instead. But there are times when this is not practical, perhaps when I have already eaten my dinner voraciously without considering the dessert only option. Other times I consciously make the smart choice to eat a well-balanced dinner...but find myself desiring a deliciously sweet snack. The problem then remains that I often avoid buying dessert-like items on my weekly grocery trip. Having treats in the house usually leads to the skipping dinner, eating dessert situation described above. Luckily, I have recently found a recipe with ingredients I often have on hand and that makes only one small peanut butter cake. Soooo good. I suggest you try it (almond butter is amazing in it as well!).

Upcoming Trips (only 7 planned before Christmas)

I add this only because I've changed one of my previously shared flights...I will now be home over Labor Day weekend.  AND there will probably be another Chicago trip in November.  Exciting stuff!

Welcome!

Hello Friends and Relatives,

Welcome to my blog.  As my description to the right states, I'm using this blog to update you with what I'm doing, to keep me motivated to be adventurous, and to work on my writing.  I love to write enjoyable communiques (i.e., not research-related writing) and I plan on writing bestselling books while living on the beach in my near future.  Consequently, I thank you for reading this and giving me an opportunity to stretch my writing wings.

My life situation is as follows: I've now lived north of Washington DC (Rockville) for almost two months.  I have been fun-ish, but I have definitely wasted some time.  Two/three years will go extremely fast if I don't apply myself to having great experiences.  For your information, I will now list the non-time-wasting outings.

1. I first went to Baltimore, MD to visit Carrier Brower-Breitweiser.  We drank bloody mary's, I had my first crab eating experience, we took the water taxi, and we explored.  I did not do many of the things I need to do, like visit the National Aquarium.

2. Downtown Bethesda, MD several times.  I had my second crab experience with my roommate, have had several happy hours at local bars, and have eaten the best steak and feta salad ever.  The downtown area is very cute, but also very close to my apartment.  I feel less than adventurous having done this several times.

3. I've explored several of the local trails for running.  Now it is hot and humid, and I run in the gym.  Adventure thwarted.  Eventually I plan to bike the Capital Crescent trail into the Georgetown area in DC to play for the day.

4. Three weekends ago I went with my roommate to Annapolis, MD.  She had work to do on a boat with the Navy, and I had nothing but time.  I walked around sipping coffee, smiling at adorable nautically-dressed couples, exploring the state capitol buildings and the US Naval Academy, and staring at the water.  I love large bodies of water (e.g. the ocean).

5. The past two weekends I visited my best friend, Desiree, in Roanoke, Va.  The drive is approximately 240 miles and can take anywhere from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours depending on the traffic.  Our first weekend was beautiful and we drove up into the mountains to look down at Roanoke, and to take fun pictures.  This last weekend was hellishly hot and we spent the majority of the time inside staying cool.  Both weekends were fabulous.

6. Last week I met my friend Yamaya Sosa Machado at a Moroccan restaurant in Dupont Circle for a delicious meal and great time catching up.  We ate new and delicious food, had some wonderful drinks, and enjoyed a little dancing.

You may notice that I did not list several things that should probably be a part of living near DC.  I have not done the touristy business of traipsing through DC looking at monuments and White Houses and Capital Hills.  This must occur.

I have not been to a beach.  I live relatively close to several beaches and have plans to visit soon...after I fly home for a wedding this weekend and fly to Chicago next weekend.  Then beach time.  It is inexcusable to not fit that in this summer.  I will go alone if needed.  Sand, books, and people watching are more than enough to keep me happy.

After the beach, I fly home again.  Then am back for a week, then fly home again for Labor Day.  What can I say? The flights were cheap and I like people in Kansas.  Although I am traveling home often, I have made several wonderful friends in my program at the National Cancer Institute, and am looking forward to sharing with you my planned adventures with them.

Lastly, whether anyone out there is reading or not, I am grateful for the amazing world we live in that allows me the chance to write and talk and explore and share.  Have a glorious Tuesday.

Love,
Amber
